Organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) in Namibia normally lack funds because there is no fund allocation from the Government of Namibia despite Namibia having signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). OPDs such as NNAD play a vital role in ensuring that members are updated and given the platforms to express themselves while engaging in activities that would better their lives. Also, OPDs are one of the strongest voices for the persons with disabilities. Without them, people with disabilities will live in abject poverty.

Awareness raising and commemoration of the international days of the Deaf have seen many Deaf people around the world demanding equal treatment and shared resources as well as access to information. Namibian National Association of the Deaf wishes to bring about equality for Deaf persons in Namibia and ensure their human rights are respected. In the process, NNAD also wishes to see the recognition and documentation of the Namibian Sign Language on par with other indigenous languages and to see resources available in the national domains – such as libraries and schools – to ensure that Deaf learners and children are educated in the most appropriate way. We aim to annually print the NSL alphabet for distribution to schools and the public and we welcome all support towards this, and other, project.

We are grateful to all our donors and supporters. Donors will receive acknowledgement on this website, and on Facebook.

Our projects rely on donor funding. As well as donating, there are many others ways to support us.

NNAD costs for 2022-2025

Item Cost N$
Funding for the Association’s administration costs including 4 years of payrolls: N$360,000 per year
N$1,440,000
Congress and Board member selection followed by a training on governance (N$148,000): 24 participants +7 people, whereas the selected Seven boards will undergo three days of training on leadership and governance prior to returning to their home regions. Congress should be budgeted every four years to allow leadership transition to take place and ensure compliance with requirements for Welfare organisations.
N$148,000
Funding for the company vehicle (7 seats or more)
N$670,000
Training of teachers of the Deaf schools
N$240,000
Training of Sign Language interpreters in schools for the Deaf (Inclusive schools). Currently there are four inclusive schools in Namibia taking in Deaf learners; those learners require sign Language interpreters to facilitate the teaching and learning as well as communication in the hearing settings.
N$240,000
Training of Deaf youth on HIV/AIDS awareness and adolescent issues: A large number of Deaf youths who have completed formal schooling are unemployed. This group is faced with life challenges including accessing health care and the ability to make end meets. In most cases, girls and younger women resort to sexual relationships with older persons, mostly the hearing, who in the process act dominant and put the Deaf persons at risk. There is little negotiation of safe sex and because there is a fee involved, the victims are usually left with no voice and suffer in silence. The need to empower them on informed sexual activity will enable them to negotiate, refuse or report forced acts wherever it’s experienced.
N$240,000
Training of Deaf women on entrepreneurship skills.
N$120,000
Organisation capacity development and administration costs that include staff and interpreters to ensure the operation and ongoing support to the Deaf community. Monthly budget of N$52,000 for five staff.
N$624,000

The projects are to be funded over a period of four years or more: 2022-2025.

Total estimate: project costs over four years will require: N$3,722,000.
